Liquid Green Transportation Fuel
The world in motion is largely responsible for the energy and climate crises of the past 60 years. Repository petroleum was expiring because hyperactive mobility over-consumed world supplies. Draining global petroleum reserves to support extreme transportation also overheated the atmosphere, destabilizing weather. Accordingly, energy answers for this age must involve curtailing mobility and shifting to perpetual fuels.
Green Fuels, those derived from Nature’s vine, are available in perpetuity at a reduced steady-state generative rate. Having filled the Earth in accord with God’s Covenant with Adam, there is now less need to travel. It is time to settle in where you live and park the car. Green Stream fuels flow with sufficient magnitude to support a Regionalized Model for living. Corn and sugar are the world’s leading agricultural products. Corn and sugar cane have led Green Stream ethanol production. The U.S. annually harvests 13 billion bushels of corn, its number one crop. Corn grows liberally in the heartland between latitudes of 35°-50°. Sugar cane is a tropical crop, mostly grown outside the U.S., 15°-30° on either side of the equator. It accounts for 80% of all sugar production. The remaining 20% of sugar cultivation derives from sugar beets. They grow in northern latitudes between 30°-60°.
Ethanol From Corn - Ethanol derived from corn is replacing vanishing petroleum. The U.S. has nearly 100 million acres of corn under cultivation, with 27% of annual production converting to ethanol fuel. Ag Tech is advancing at the rate of two bushels per acre per year (1.3% rate of progress). Recent U.S. aggregate yield has been reported at 135 bushels/acre, but trend projections are closer to 160 bushels/acre. World corn Ag Tech is far below the U.S. standard regarding yield. Corn reportedly commands a price of $3.50 per bushel (about $0.06/Lb). Capital cost of a plant for producing ethanol from corn is reported at $2.00 per annual gallon. Ethanol yield from corn is diversely calculated at 450 gallons/acre, 100 gallons/ton, or 2.8 gallons/bushel. Some place the minimum cost capability of mass-produced corn ethanol at $2.00/gallon.
NOTE: Cost data appearing in this review are drawn from a variety of sources. The situation analysis amounts to a feasibility study. The American Association of Cost Engineers rates functional and cost factor uncertainty at 85% for these kinds of studies. AACE accordingly projects final costs at this stage of refinement within -15% to +50% of true cost. Cost engineering follows the tradition of incorporating a 50% contingency in cost build-ups.
Ethanol From Sugar - Ethanol is not being mass produced from sugar in the U.S. Sugar cane has 15% sugar (sucrose) content, sugar beets 20%. Sugar more easily converts to ethanol than does starch in corn. The U.S. devotes less than 1 million acres to cane production, reportedly harvesting 35 tons per acre. Recent world commodity price for sugar is around $400/ton ($0.20/Lb), fluctuating 50% over the past decade. Sugar cane diverted to ethanol would yield 450 gallons per acre or 20 gallons per ton. Capital cost of an ethanol conversion plant has been estimated at $2.00 per annual ton. Fuel ethanol minimum cost capability has been estimated at $2.40 per gallon, 62% of that cost attributable to feedstock cost.
Sugar beet acreage in the U.S. is 1.2 million. Sugar yield is 25 tons per acre. Contrary to sugar cane, whose stalk grows skyward to an 11-foot height, beets are root fruit (tubers) growing into the ground 1-to-3 feet with tapered form. In a 160-day season, average weight is between 1.1 and 2.2 pounds, with sugar content reaching 20%. Market price for sugar beets is $48 per ton ($0.025/Lb). Produce diverted to ethanol yields 450 gallons per acre or 25 gallons per ton. Capital cost of conversion has been estimated at $2.00 per annual ton, and minimum fuel cost $2.40/gallon (67% feedstock cost included).
The U.S. has far more climate potential for sugar beets (68%) than for sugar cane (8%). Climate opportunity for sugar beets (68%) and corn (92%) is very large, but the uncommitted field opportunity for beets (683X expansion factor) greatly exceeds that of maturing corn (2.6X expansion factor). There is a latent Green Energy field opportunity for home gardening of ¼ acre (3.6 % of total ag area). Beyond supplying free family food unencumbered by logistical energy burden, home gardens can accommodate ground-hugging sugar beets far better than tall corn or very tall sugar cane cultivated to home-produce ethanol fuel.
Socio-technical factors bear significantly on our energy and transportation future. It is absolutely essential to throttle back on mobility energy to avoid further climate damage. Present climate destabilization is hugely damaging infrastructure, and causing unnecessary, unacceptable injury or loss of life. Light-weighting automobiles will save considerable fuel, conserve materials, curtail heat release, and moderate carbon dioxide imbalance. Some project a 0.6 mile-per-gallon savings for every 100-pound weight savings. Technicalities of substituting aluminum for iron or steel can yield an aluminum-intense vehicle (AIV) that is 50%-65% lighter than present production (now averaging 3,500 pounds). Social reforms leading to a Regional Life Model can eliminate commuting (57% fuel savings), cut the speed limit to 35 miles-per-hour (reduce damage 95%, improve fuel economy 10%), and save countless lives. Vehicles suitable for a Regional Model would naturally be much smaller, lighter, and fuel efficient. Such change also opens a wider door of acceptance for cool and clean electric vehicles.
Technicalities of substituting aluminum for plastic can extend vehicle service life 2X or 3X, cutting cost and original manufacturing heat expenditures by 50%-70%. An all-aluminum vehicle (AAV) can be infinitely recycled, saving 95% of original aluminum manufacturing energy. The lighter AAV would reduce operating energy expense by 1/3 or more, regardless of propulsion choices of electricity, liquid, or gas. Since aluminum is one of the few permanent materials of construction, it also affords the consumer a lifetime investment. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy today is about 27 miles-per-gallon. Changes of the sort just reviewed could raise that figure to 55 miles per gallon and cut annual vehicle fuel consumption 75%, to 175 gallons per year.
Once needful reform in transportation technology is achieved, the Liquid Green Transportation Energy equation boils down to judiciously balancing land area devoted to ethanol fuel production AND miles of Liquid Green Fuel transportation available to a family. Ethanol fuels are able to deliver one-car, one-family, annual mobility on less than an acre of corn or sugar vine. Ag Tech is advancing so well, it may be able to feed the hungry automobile without compromising human and animal food supply, or going beyond the U.S. present 45% land area dedication to agriculture.
The Liquid Green Transportation Energy initiative amounts to nursing automobiles from the world’s two most vital food vines. Compromise of global food supply must be avoided. When transportation was on the petroleum supply line only, mismanagement did occur. Generous repositories were allowed to empty too fast, letting too few nations work up a prudent transportation repertoire, and early over-consumers spilled so much heat into the environment that the global climate became destabilized and destructive. Later shortages precipitated a global petroleum crisis with huge human and environmental cost. Some of my calculations indicate that an energy garden of 1,000 square feet could supply a year of automobile fuel. Another of similar size could provide family food year-by-year. Gardening and processing knowledge is available, learnable, and executable within the home & family talent domain. Equipment needs, even an all-season greenhouse, are manageable and affordable. God’s earth and light and water are free. Family labor is light and free, after the manner of Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden. The U.S.A. rose on Reformation Christianity. Self-government succeeded because of the Mind of Christ in each man and family. American ingenuity, can-do workmanship, and team spirit built the Nation with unwavering power from indwelling Christ. So, it is not surprising that both food and mobility energy perplexities of this day are likely to resolve and manage at the citizen level, invoking the same core competencies present at the beginning.

Liquid Green Transportation Fuel Coherency Panels

Since the more recent and more accurate data summarized do not change prescriptions of the original narrative, there is limited need for explanatory text. Coherency Panels focus on key issues and potent variables, so dynamics of change towards a crisis-free energy future may be more readily seen and understood. Since the Liquid Green Initiative involves significant socio-technical change, data summarization is tentative, clouded by uncertainties, and subject to debate. However, if the theory-in-use (as parsimonious causal models sometimes are called in the realm of strategic change) is adequate (that is, the boxes encompass an efficient, effective set of explanatory variables), it should be possible to update model components in an unconfusing, uncluttered, theory-stable way. Ill-fitting data also should “pop” and evoke prompt resolution. A worthy Green Energy Coherency Set reduces the comprehension task by perhaps 90%, so it is rather effective for both familiarization and periodic reviews during these turbulent times of energy resource transition. Green Strategies will increasingly involve Americans at the “grass roots” level as Prime Change Agents. Regarding aluminum as Nature’s “transportation metal,” nearly three times lighter than iron and steel, and endowed with corrosion-free permanence, an All-Aluminum-Vehicle (AAV) could double fuel efficiency. Reducing speed to a safer, regional 35 MPH figures in that efficiency achievement. Ending the hoop-snake commuting tradition makes 5,000 miles per year the new odometer standard, tripling auto lifetime and reducing its time cost by 2/3. This driving style ends single-passenger trips, enabling one-car-per-family to pretty much satisfy the transportation agenda. The Regional Green Automobile will be fed by only 9% of the U.S. cornfield (down from 39% under present automotive standards). Automotive heat product to the environment will decline by more than 80%, making Green Cars a very fine “mobile citizen” of the global environment.
This Graphics Panel arrays annual change among key variables of corn agriculture. Rates of change are small, averaging about 1.4%. While corn volume increases over 2% annually, population growth and per capita consumption of corn changes very little. Ag-Tech productivity improvements cover 75% of the annual corn volume increase, and have been allowing the total agricultural land burden of the U.S. to shrink slightly. Corn exports of 20% are relatively constant (would register as zero differential on the graph). They attest to liberal oversupply of domestic food need, and represent a substantial shield against potential domestic food shortage accompanying dedication to corn ethanol service.
Socio-technical changes affecting the Liquid Green Energy equation are of very large cumulative magnitudes for relief of both fuel supply and climate stress. Light-weighting the U.S. automobile fleet can bring 30% savings in transportation fuel. Eliminating commuting (i.e., live where you work or work where you live) affords nearly 60% fuel savings. Together, these socio-technical changes can reduce the U.S. transportation energy footprint by 70%. U.S. leadership in these categories would set a global example bringing much relief to fuel shortages, food-vs-fuel stress, energy-motivated climate disruption, and strained international relations (tariffs, policing, desperate migration, terrorism, petro-wars, etc.).
Technology Forecasting Evidence
Only since the 1930s has Ag-Tech brought productivity improvement to the corn field. Trend and trend extrapolation covering a century of progressive Ag-Tech anticipates a 10-fold increase in corn field output. The annual rate of corn Ag-Tech productivity progress is twice the rate of population growth. With another century of similar Ag-Technology Advance, America should host corn fields producing more than 50 tons per acre (a 13-fold increase from present performance). Research on corn field planting density and stalk ear-bearing density suggests that Ag-Tech progress might top out at 75 tons per acre.

GeoForce Project
TriGo Family Vehicle
TriGo is a compact family automobile designed for light weight, low aerodynamic drag, high fuel efficiency, affordability, permanence, quiet low-speed operation, and passenger safety. This Concept Car should weigh in at 500 pounds dry and 1,100 pounds gross vehicle weight, about 1/4 of the present automotive standard. The suspension choice of three wheels instead of four activates an immediate 25% weight reduction. Substitution of aluminum for steel as material of construction threads a 65% weight reduction. Double wedge aerodynamics affords 50% longitudinal drag reduction. Tucked supine seating comfortably and efficiently reduces seating height 25% with attendant cross-sectional drag reduction. Setting the driver at point and three passengers in the rear minimizes driver distraction, maximizes driver visibility, and maximally insulates passengers in the event of frontal impact. Length was trimmed about 25% with respect to the average automobile, bringing further weight, fuel, and cost economies. Liberal use of linear rather than curvilinear form greatly economizes fabrication and opens a wide door to self-manufacture. Preference for metal construction enhances both safety and permanence.
Present auto industry cost, power, and fuel usage technical capabilities register $7.50 per pound, 23 horsepower per pound, and 56 ton miles per gallon. Translating these technical capabilities to the TriGo projects a vehicle cost of $4,000, a 50 horsepower powerplant, and fuel efficiency of 55 miles per gallon. Since TriGo is designed for a safer 35 miles per hour maximum speed, less than half the present automotive standard, a rear-mounted 25 horsepower engine should be adequate. Its momentum envelope, a measure of road hazard creation, is about 10% of present roadway machinery.
TriGo is a truly Green Car capable of Liquid Green Fuel or clean, cool electric propulsion. A solar roof can trickle-charge the battery and run electronic instrumentation. With three times the speed of a power wheel chair, it is amenable to simplified control stick steering (which removes air bags and chest impalement hazard associated with steering wheels). The rear engine compartment is encased in sound insulation. A multi-muffler exhausts almost no noise to the environment. The exterior is free of mirrors. Front, side, and rear day-night cams registering at the drivers console afford a maximally-safe full-time 360-degree visual field. Illumination of lateral air induction ports make the TriGo profile fully visible at intersections. With lights and cameras and lustrous aluminum metallic finish, TriGo possesses an unparalleled day-and-night, see-and-be-seen safety envelope for transporting your most precious possession: your dear family.
HydroForce Project
Family Solar Riverboat
The Solar Riverboat enacts the concept of using sun power to navigate river channels. God’s Sunshine Bow is used in a manner parallel to wind driving a sailboat. For family cruising, both solars and sailors operate in the slow and easy speed regime of less than 10 miles per hour. A Solar Riverboat operates even when there is no wind. However, it does require sunshine. River channels usually are not ideal for sailing, but frequently host row boating and power boating. Given the diminishing supply of combustion fuel for power boating, the solar-electric connection made by the Solar Riverboat looms as a key to continued easy presence on the river without contributing to global warming.
Fundamentally, the Solar River Boat is a metal pontoon boat constructed of light-weight, long-lasting aluminum, preferably cost-and-energy-economic recycled alloy. Design simplicity economizes both material and fabrication, and opens the door to self-manufacture. Liberal use of metal and absence of internal combustion engines or fuel tanks significantly increases safety for family boating. Natural, owner-maintainable metallic luster provides outward beauty to all aluminum components. Solar-driven electro-galvanic protection of the hull minimizes corrosion and eliminates need for painting. Pontoons minimize hull contact with the water (like catamarans), so they efficiently glide with less resistance (drag) over the waves. The forward pontoon zone is reinforced with metal or plastic to shield beaching damage. Aluminum pontoons are amenable to mechanical or chemical cleaning and polishing to maintain or enhance the original finish. Their angular or circular tube form factor also lends to in-service covering with an unobtrusive clear strippable spray-on or press-on plastic anti-fouling coating or heat-shrink-wrap. This easy seasonal preventive maintenance eliminates the arduous task of manually removing accumulated marine growth after each annual river campaign.
The cruiser cabin is entirely wrapped floor-to-ceiling in a clear or tinted crack-resistant plastic window wall of acrylic or polycarbonate. Streamlining is accomplished horizontally by a semicircular geometry at the bow. This novel design affords a 360-degree panorama of lovely riverscape that hopefully inspires each Solar River Boating family to once again fall in love with Mother Nature, and revive stewardship of hydro assets that has lapsed in many places. Draperies lining the entire cabin interior can be drawn for privacy and shade. The rear porch may be draped for privacy and sun shade, or with mosquito netting.
A solar roof stretches over the Panorama Cabin and open-air rear deck. It collects radiance from the sun sufficient to power the Solar Riverboat’s electric motor(s). A central, front-to-rear skylight admits natural light to the cabin and accommodates one or more silent electric fans for cabin ventilation. LEDs efficiently illuminate the interior, open-air rear porch, and running lights. Solar collection on the water can be augmented (e.g., doubled) by towing a collapsible solar panel float behind the vessel (can also function as a recreation platform).
Trolling-type electric motors propel the Solar Riverboat. They usually deliver 3-4 miles per hour on a fishing boat, about 1/3 the speed of a family sailing cruiser. Higher speeds are possible if props are pitched for higher speed. Novel to the Solar Riverboat design is (1) shrouding the propeller zone within an Acceleration Tube and (2) using 2 or 3 in-line propellers, sequentially pitch-optimized to accelerate the stream as it flows from intake to exhaust. These adjustments convert conventional troller geometry to an efficient hydro-jet with greater speed capability.
The Solar Riverboat interior is basically empty. Families costlessly furnish the vessel with existing possessions from home: aluminum folding chairs, foldable card/dining table, portable A/V electronics, portable grill, blankets and pillows, sleeping bags, air mattresses for sleeping and water sports, picnic basket, and bicycles for shore excursions. Integral to the Solar Riverboat are safety vests, fire extinguishers, portable toilet, and deep-discharge lead-acid storage batteries.
Unique to this vessel is the Captain’s Portable Helm (a laptop, tablet computer, or radio-control console). The Porta-Helm consolidates vital information about weather, sun intensity, solar panel output, wind velocity, river current speed, battery charge, motor power draw, hours left, miles left, river depth, fish activity, compass heading, hours of daylight remaining, etc. Also integral to the convenient and safer walk-around-the-boat Porta-Helm is autopilot GPS navigation that can lay out planned routes and automatically pilot the Riverboat to a destination and back. A portable helm conserves precious space aboard a small vessel, frees the captain to position himself at critical perimeters during maneuvers, and allows for minimalist manual backup in case of emergency.
The Solar Riverboat qualifies as a year-round power station. If you are able to winter-park on your own property, it can be tied into house power to subsidize winter electric bills while helping to pay down capital cost of the vessel. Those winter-parking near the shore might outfit the solarized cabin as an aquatic family Nature retreat, quiet office space at water’s edge, or mini-workshop for engineering charitable river asset recovery and stewardship.
The following Coherency Panel includes indices of performance from present watercraft of this type (mostly troller fishing boats and recreational pontoon boats). The Lunar Force was conceived to win needful energy from the world's largest satellite: the Moon. It is occasioned by emergence of preeminent U.S. aerospace expertise and technology during the last half of the 20th Century, concurrent with rising global energy crisis. While Lunar Force may have an enduring mission, its immediate objective is to tap extra-terrestrial energy reserves while Earth supplies remain short or problematic. Longer term, prudent global energy policy eventually will bring the supply-demand equation into balance. When the present situation of over-consumption has been cured, it is certain that our Creator has provided sufficient terrestrial energy for all mankind to live the promised abundant life.
The Lunar dimension of energy policy extends an earlier space energy initiative by Dr. Patterson involving very large orbiting solar power platforms. Solar collectors on a scale of football fields or square miles were to be erected in space at geo-synchronous orbit, to beam concentrated energy to Earth-side reception stations for re-distribution. Harvesting power from an expanding array of large-scale orbiting solar-tech platforms remains a viable strategy. However, no energy collector satellite aggregation easily approaches Moon area magnitudes. So, establishing a very-large-scale Lunar power station emerges as the dominant strategy. The logistical technology sketched here can support both Earth-proximate and Moon-based energy capture missions. Less sure in the Lunar Power Station technology package is ability to focus an intensified energy harvest beam across 250,000 miles, about 500 times the distance a small near-Earth orbiting power station must focus. LASER and microwave technologies upon which space energy depends are young and evolving. Well-established is the opportunity to expand the energy gift to Earth (about 1,000 watts per square meter of Earth surface) by reaching into the heavens beyond the circle of the Earth to collect whatever we need from a very rich solar system.
Space City
Key Earth-side components of a Lunar Energy Initiative are (1) conceiving a launch process that is safe and affordable, and (2) conceiving a logistical aerospace craft that is safe and affordable for multiple Earth-Moon-Earth missions. Space City embodies infrastructure requisite to an optimized Lunar Force launch objective. As the concept schematic shows, Space City situates at a mountain repose for factoring significant free gravity acceleration into the launch program. Other free and perpetual launch energy resources of Space City include expansive fields of solar panels and wind turbines for electricity. Earth-side gravity and electricity are God's Bow for empowering launch without encumbering the aerospace craft with weighty fuel and rocket booster burdens. An expansive green energy field for harvesting on-board chemical energy (alcohol fuel) rounds out the resource base of Space City. All or some green power can be nurtured under glass for year-round cultivation, after the fashion of a garden green house. Perpetual energy infrastructure qualifies Space City as self-sufficient green-stream space port amenable to private funding, global service for world peace, and convenient multinational collaboration.
Lunar Shuttle
The logistical vehicle for establishing and maintaining a lunar base to harvest energy from the sun and re-direct to Earth draws upon the well-established NASA shuttle concept for Earth-vicinity missions. The Lunar Shuttle design of Global Environmental Service's Lunar Force can be distinguished in several ways from NASA's discontinued STS. It is not government-funded, and it has full Earth-Moon operating capability. It launches from Space City at extremely high velocity on a straight-and-level trajectory (rather than vertical) with kinetic energy endowments from Space Mountain's Accelerator Architecture. Jet propulsion (rather than liquid-fuel or solid-fuel rockets) furnish acceleration to orbital velocity and deceleration upon return to Earth. Fuel-miser, tech-simplified SCRAM Jet technology operates very well at high Mach numbers in rarified atmospheres up to the space demarcation Kaman Line (about 62 miles high). Heavy ceramic tiling is largely foregone since the Lunar Shuttle returns backwards, using SCRAM Jets as an engine brake. The same thickening atmosphere around 75 miles high capable of causing extreme heating of leading edges actually intensifies engine braking, slowing the craft in the higher realms of the Thermosphere. Ability to actively brake and maneuver in aerospace will allow space velocities to bleed down in a more gradual, controlled manner, re-introducing the mostly-metallic craft at more material-friendly skin temperatures.
The Lunar Shuttle also introduces progressive SCRAM or PSCRAM geometry. Laterally positioned SCRAM Jets are placed in series, drawing additional cooling air to mix with and further accelerate upstream exhaust. Vectoring vanes at the rear and side of the Lunar Shuttle augment steering and retro-thrust. Small fore-and-aft rockets provide for left-right-up-down-forward-backward lunar and space maneuvering. The tremendous braking power of the Lunar Shuttle confers potential to deploy numerous, large parachutes for cushioned landing on its own gear at very low horizontal and vertical velocities (Angel Descent). Should an in-flight emergency demand it, either fore or aft astronaut flight management studio can break away from the mothership for parachute descent as an escape capsule safety cocoon.

Venetia Sailing Cargo Ship Global Trade After the Carbon Era
Coal, petroleum, and even nuclear power have ruled the waves for over 100 years. The latest logistical king afloat is a petroleum-fueled container cargo ship 1,200 feet long by 200 feet wide by 200 feet high displacing 100,000 tonnes. About 5,000 of these giants circle the earth at up to 17 miles per hour, each accommodating around 3,500 cargo containers of about 20'L x 8'H x 8'W. These ocean masters interconnect with ground logistics at huge terminals, forming the largest logistical network the world has ever known.
Nations great and small depend on this system for goods vital to their survival. No one predicts a fully functional world when the petroleum stops, and the oil ships cease their service. Only highly-trained military of most strategic importance (some carriers and submarines) have made a shift to nuclear. Coal-fired steamships are not being made, and would be able to fill the shipping void only for awhile, until the world's coal reserves ran out. Tall sailing ships forming the backbone of world trade before the 1900s are logistical miniatures by comparison. Among the last of the big sailing vessels measured only 330'L x 123'H x 50'W and displaced only 6% of the modern cargo standard. Yet, sail power engages precious stream energy, and possesses power to end air pollution and global warming at sea. Thanks to perpetual trade winds and ocean currents between continents, sailing vessels can just about equal speed of the carbon fleet.
Venetia is a sailing vessel designed by Dr. Patterson to tap both sailing and solar power for high-tonnage cargo shipping. Named for similitude of its solar-panel sails to venetian window blinds, it engages a new, more efficient sail concept potentially scalable to modern container cargo vessels. Incrementing solar sails and solarizing a huge deck gives the vessel free travel energy, computer-controllable for accident-free cruising and harboring. Linear Bridge and River Tunnel Towards More Permanent Spans
Across the American system of transport surfaces, bridges compose the greatest threat to integrity. The era of intense infrastructure development is now over a century old, so many strong and durable steel structures are reaching the end of their design lifetimes. The reconstruction bill is staggering. Many bridges simply won’t be replaced. In a river-rich nation, this consolidation adds time and fuel expense when we are least able to bear it.
Amidst the obligatory rush to replace spanning architecture, it is wise to consider designs capable of greater economy, permanence, and safety. The Linear Bridge and River Tunnel are two valley-spanning and river-spanning offerings Pennsylvania, the U.S.A. and the world might consider. No spans over rivers or ravines are more efficient. The newer dimension of going under the river presents new engineering challenges, but opens up a generally simpler engineering-and-use environment. Artistically, River Tunnels could restore the landscape of American rivers to original natural beauty.

Urban Light Pittsburgh "City of Light" Solarization
Visitors and residents have long appreciated the emerging City of Light architecture of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Given its smoky coal and mill town history, it is no less than inspirational to witness annual Light-Up Night or see a million-light City panorama pop into view on exiting the Fort Pitt Tunnel underground gateway. There were steel times when residents could not see across the street in the middle of the day owing to air pollution. Cleaner air of post-industrial times now lets the City sparkle to the delight of reminiscing seniors, art-appreciative photographers, lovers embracing on Mount Washington Boulevard, cam-in-hand visitors from all around, and, of course, ordinary Pittsburghers. It is nothing less than a light-theme metamorphosis.
There is another burst of light lurking in the wings for Pittsburgh. In the aftermath of an energy crunch that took economic legs right out from under the steel town, new energy and new light promise a rising future. Pittsburgh can make new energy via perpetual streams, like solar, wind, and green vine perpetuities. Muscle City also can walk and cycle, motor electrically, and illuminate under LEDs with dramatic energy conservation. Unfolding in this GES Project Vision are ways to adapt regional landscape, monumental buildings, and homes to a clean-and-easy-living Millennial Stream Energy Society. There is a promising blend of beauty and economy that will bring the good life to all, especially the over-burdened-urban society.

Sun Belt Solar Farming The Dawn's Early Light

Solar Farming was my first perpetual energy production initiative. It began with a trip through the Sun Belt in 1995 that fixed my attention on remarkable desert scenery in the American South West. I was particularly struck by the vast acreage of low brush composing a persistent, stunted crop sustained by photosynthesis under contradicting dry and dusty conditions. Perhaps biotech could win energy from this living sun-baked field that seemed to stretch out forever (I was headed to the U. S. biotech capital in Southern California). Soon familiar solar panel tech began to complete my vision of "leaves" for the ranging Sun Belt energy-potential fields. Southern California frequently tapped the sun for energy using rooftop solar panels on restaurants and other commercial buildings. Unfortunately, rooftops are small acreage making little difference in the overall energy equation. Neither did overcrowded California afford surplus land for "planting" fields of solar panels at ground level. The wide-open spaces of desertified landscape I had just seen in Arizona and New Mexico seemed to be optimal habitat for Solar Farming, land just waiting to be put to better use, reserved by amazing and conspicuous sage brush.
The Sun Belt Solar Farming story has been given biotechnical and economic refinement in the interim years. You are invited to peruse the downloadable PDF drawn from a PowerPoint I've put together. Not only do I think it a good answer for American Sun Belt citizens and environment, I believe it can meet important human needs in sun-rich electricity-poor regions all around the world. It is time to harvest easy perpetual energy above the ground, and share the abundance broadly enough to end global energy crisis.

Lights on the modern automobile are a nearly burden-free, quiet, growing safety feature, especially life-preserving during the most hazardous mobility time: night. Inside, they light the dashboard that permits safe control of the vehicle. Adorning the auto exterior with numerous light sources forward and aft creates a reassuring safety cushion several times the basic length of the automobile. Liberal window glass (green house) qualifies as the most valuable daytime safety appointment. But numerous, bright, splashing, even colorful lights fit the automobile for battle during the night and twilight periods of peak human hazard in the mobility time zone.
Amazingly dim during night travel are the side elevations of automobiles. The lateral facade is amply fitted with glass for daytime safety, but it is the dim side of night mobility. Perpendicular traffic (side roads and intersections) can have a hard time seeing your cozy travel capsule. Furthermore, if they misjudge and run into the side of your vehicle, there is less material of construction, motion restraints, or defensive body positioning to insulate from harm.
Lighting auto wheels is a safety initiative long overdue. Dual wheel geometry on each side of the vehicle tends to present the wheels as sidelight equivalents to headlamps. Wheel motion can amplify the light signature of any wheel-borne point of light. If wheel lights remain on while parked, they also splash the approach path to the vehicle for safer footing. Finally, with the well-established trend towards glamour wheels (e.g., spokes and spinners), wheel lights enhance and preserve those aesthetics into the dark of night.
Wheel lights should be about as economical a safety addition to the modern automobile as anything potentially augmenting safety for refined auto designs. Wheel-or-fender-mounted, bright, long-lasting, low-wattage LEDs can be powered by battery, motion energy, or solar energy for nearly free operation.

Wheel lights aren't the only thing needed to drive auto fatalities, injuries, and damages to zero, but they are an affordable, fruitful platform for safety progress.

These are days to bring great salvation to the world’s expansive oceans. Glassy seas are the area king of Earth’s surface, and the free food king of God’s table. Beneath the surface we sadly recognize huge depletion of food fish stores. The living sea entails a stewardship obligation to God that must be carefully rejoined. Genesis submarines of the Global Environmental Service HydroForce are dedicated to undersea restoration. With both surface and submerged mission space, they range like the fish they are commissioned to tend. “World of the Sea” is a theme song for this reviving work . . . Spiritual buoyancy to human souls who must do it. The song also occasions reverent remembrance of the many souls who have been lost at sea. It pictures their resurrection to life, to love, and to safely renewed service in the deep blue water world that sadly took them away for awhile. Genesis heralds vitality at sea doubly magnified. River Channel Management (RCM) endeavors to deepen river channels by removing long-term sediment accumulations from America's Mass Agricultural Age. These erosion products are residuals of high quality top soils that can be profitably recycled to point-of-origin farm fields. Sediment-scavenging RCM Barges deployed singly or in rafted multiples effectively open clogged river beds to improve navigation safety and reduce flooding with significant damage avoidance, cost savings, and life preservation.
Complementing RCM in this Project Proposal is Agricultural Furrow Management (AFM). Its objective is to cut agricultural soil erosion by 75%. Timing is important in both of these conservation initiatives. RCM can rescue river sediment before it is lost to salty ocean environments that render it is useless for agriculture. AFM can significantly lock in place recovered farm topsoil assets, preserving farmland fertility, keeping waterways more open (safe) for navigation, and curtailing the rising tide of river flooding.
The unsettling effect of global warming on climate and agriculture is expected to challenge food supply in diverse ways (floods, droughts, season variance, storm damage, etc.). RCM and AFM afford incremental relief and avoidance under human control and with profit incentives that can help make a difference in dealing with an increasingly disturbed and destructive Mother Nature.

Physical Fitness Friday
Eric Liddell was son of a Christian missionary family evangelizing China. He was apart from parents for education in Edinboro University, ultimately preparing for the mission field. In addition to developing spiritually and intellectually, he became famous for athletic achievement in rugby (wing) and then as a runner for England in the 1924 Olympics in Paris at age 22. Although his sister was concerned that running would draw him away from his China mission commitment, he assured her that he was running was for the glory of God, and after the Olympics he would serve full-time in China with her.
Eric’s spirituality was tested in the Olympic Games, where he likely would have won the 100m dash (he had earlier beaten the Jewish Cambridge scholar who did win). Heats for the Hundred were scheduled on Sunday, and Eric felt he could not violate the Sabbath (actually, the Lord’s Day) by seeking qualification in the preliminary heats. Judges would not grant him a waiver on the basis of his firmly held religious conviction. A Cambridge athlete running in a longer race (400m) offered his earned right to compete to Eric, just so he could “see him run.” Eric won that consolation race in world record time.
While in Olympic City, Eric preached in the Church of Scotland on Sunday. He used the occasion to stress the importance of revering God’s laws above laws of the nations. He may have been surrendering the title of World’s Fastest Human (accorded record holders in the 100m dash) by taking a stand for keeping the Sabbath holy as God’s Day of Rest. Eric went to China in 1925 and served until age 43, when he died during internment in a Japanese prison camp. He was active in Christian witness and ministry, sacrificing heroically for lambs of his China homeland (he was born in Tianjin). Eric never again ran in Olympic or world-class athletic events, but he was a world-class Christian.
Notable to me as one also of Scottish descent, is the evidence of a SIGN given by Eric Liddell to the athletic world to refrain from athletic competition on the Lord’s Day. Better would it have been to establish Friday as a day of physical celebration and brotherhood in Christ. Christian Europe was largely built up by 1924 according to God’s covenant with Adam. It would have been reasonable to declare one less work day (Friday) among all developed Christian nations, and dedicate it to honoring the men of work, Adam’s race, by glorious athletic endeavor. Who knows whether or not failing to heed Eric Liddell’s admonition about keeping the Sabbath Day led Europe to war, with nations like Germany and Italy believing they have so much surplus labor power they could devote it to making weapons to subdue neighboring Christian nations, destroying much of Adam’s handiwork in the process.
I believe God has used Scotsmen, Christian men inhabiting one of the smallest nations on earth, to champion territorial matters down through history on behalf of the advancing Kingdom of God. They seem to leave nearly invisible footprints of great Spiritual significance, seeable in retrospect by spiritually attentive eyes. Eric tried to establish a frontier for athleticism that would not surrender a most holy day to lesser things. Perhaps by the hindsight of a later Scotsman (me!) mankind will win the much awaited four-day work week in Christendom. Let us then hope to claim Friday, the day of our Lord’s unspeakably cruel and grievous labor on the Cross, as the day to celebrate the physical excellence of God’s Sons, by games renown for spirit and humane physical endeavor. The modern athlete is an icon representing ALL the men of history, especially Christian history, who have labored so long and hard without glory, applause, or consummate bodily beautification. They play now for livelihood on behalf of forefathers who knew only work for livelihood, often distressingly strenuous and debilitating, while faithfully filling the earth, taming it, and stewarding in the name of God.
Senior Citizens have a unique leadership opportunity to encourage adoption of a Four-Day Work Week by their cheerful practice of Physical Fitness Fridays. Businesses following the Elder example and choosing to offer a mercifully shorter work week would free Fridays for health-enhancing athletic experiences and attendance at sports events. Athletic Fridays can help to re-direct and re-dedicate Sundays for rest and Spiritual rejuvenation. Positioning Americans for a three-day holiday (“holy day”) weekend emulates the Trinity of God: Fitness Friday (BODY rejuvenation referencing God the Son) – Sabbath Saturday (MIND rejuvenation referencing the Law [Chronicles] of God the Father) – Resurrection Sunday (SPIRIT rejuvenation referencing Christ [Anointed One] by God the Holy Spirit).

About 70% of U.S. freight valued at $670M moves by trucks consuming 22% of U.S. energy flow. Tractor-trailers are vital to national interest, but constitute the largest, heaviest moving mass on American highways, adding significantly to national mobility hazard. They travel at automobile speeds, but weigh 20 times more. It takes about 4 times greater distance to halt a tractor-trailer than a passenger automobile.
The 2 million tractor-trailers on the road represent only 1% of the U.S. roadway fleet, but are involved with 8% of all traffic accidents. The 5,700 fatalities per year involving tractor-trailers represent 14% of all traffic fatalities. Accidents involving tractor-trailers cost the nation $20 billion annually, about 4% of traffic accident cost. These data indicate that tractor-trailers generate 20 times more crash energy than autos, are 14 times more fatal than the automobile, 8 times more accident prone, and generate 7 times more damage.
Attribution for tractor-trailer accidents: Brakes (27%), Route Unfamiliar (19%), Driver Under Pressure (10%), Overly Tired (7%), Aggressive Driving (5%), Tires (3%), Illness (1%). It is believed that the Family-Aboard Logistical Tractor-Trailer initiative presented here is responsive to most of these accident factors.
This tractor-trailer initiative is named “Big Tom” in remembrance of my father’s only brother, Thomas Patterson, a skilled high school football player who became a tractor-trailer driver, eventually supporting wife Arvella and four children: Donnie, Keith, Karen, and Denny. While still a young husband and father, Tom was killed in a tragic highway jackknife accident as he tried to avoid hitting a car that pulled in front of him from a side road.

Survival of planet Earth and humanity has become topical since onset of the nuclear age. It has evoked renewed interest more recently within the composite problems of climate distress. I have adopted a simplifying principle in facing the extreme notion of extinction: Embrace the matter as a contrast between short-term and long-term planning. God-informed humanity has expectation of abundant living, length of days, continuance on Earth, steady-state living, unburdened lifestyle, even eternal life. Overseers of business and government invested with divine view weave long-range planning into their agenda. Those uninformed of divine eyesight, covenants, and promises weave struggle (competition, predation, conflict, wars, etc.) into planning and roll up the planning horizon. Terms like marketing myopia, quick fix, crisis management, turnaround specialist, etc. populate that school of thought and practice. They are short-range planners operating in a context of opportunism and quick profits who believe future generations are obliged to solve their own future problems, even if inherited from mis-steps of past generations. Since mannish problems can mire in a pit of demise (Matthew:15.14), one can appreciate why some contemplate doom, destruction, extinction, etc.
Holding to promises of God for unfailing help in times of trouble, I do not surrender to the Gordian Knot. With hopefulness from God on High, I put forward constructive analysis of today’s perplexities, especially letting Spiritual resources furnish requisite simplification. Further, I appeal to merciful God within you to guide your understanding of these matters, and motivate your personal service towards a world at peace.
River Power Tapping Horizontal Hydro Power
River Power was a 1995 product of the mind set to contemplating the many rivers of Pennsylvania as a natural resource with yet untapped energy potential. Across the U.S.A. hydro power assets (like Hoover Dam) had been nearly completely developed. Hydro engineers of our River Glorious Nation tapped essentially all the vertical-drop potential of hydro flows to make cool electric power. Realizing that moving river water also possessed untapped horizontal power, I first set to estimating energy potential of this plentiful working fluid passing through three mighty westward-flowing rivers of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. I had just returned from a trip to California where rivers of wind flowing between majestic Sierra Madre mountain peaks were being harvested for energy by numerous, huge turbines dancing in the wind. Pittsburgh lacked the tremendous natural wind pump like that operating on the West Coast, but we possessed a huge natural water pump that set about 813 times more mass in motion (for comparable cross-sectional area). River water moves generally slower than wind in a horizontal direction, but the huge increase in mass more than compensates for the velocity deficit in assessing energy content. Wind velocity around Pittsburgh averages about 8 mph, while river current moves around 1 mph. Accordingly, each cubic foot of horizontally flowing river delivers 13 times more power than a cubic foot of horizontally blowing wind, both flowing day and night.

Allegheny River is reported to be 16.5 feet deep at Pittsburgh. Width near the Point is estimated at 900 feet. Accordingly, its cross section would be about 14,850 ft2. Government measured discharge is 19,900 cubic feet per second (CFS). Accordingly, Natural River Power is 1,684 KW (about 2,258 HP). Homes in the U.S. use about 10,900 KWH/Yr or 1,248 W continuously. If we could tap full cross-section of the Allegheny River and perfectly convert it to electricity, Allegheny River Power would generate electricity sufficient for 1,354 area homes or 243 electric cars. Unfortunately, converting all River Power of the Allegheny to electricity would sap river current and stall the river. However, the River Power energy “plum” appears large enough to merit R&D of non-stalling technology. River Power is potent, proximate, perpetual energy, cleaner than coal-fired electric power generation, cooler than combustion power (nuclear, gas, oil, or coal), and almost as free as fishing once optimal technology is developed, installed, and paid-up. Prospering technology might also incorporate filtration to restore river purity and subsidize food fish restocking.

Crisis-avoiding river channel excavation via River Channel Management can significantly moderate global warming’s adverse consequences to U.S. rivers (and rivers around the world). Intelligent River Channel Management also can posture global river systems for enhanced River Power benefits, easing global energy shortages. Raging waters often do more damage than disturbed air or land. River Channel Management affords ways to constructively channel river fury to the benefit of mankind. The anticipated electricity benefit in these times of energy shortage looms as an investment incentive that prepays damage avoidance and tames mighty rivers of Earth. There are few strategies on the environmental table these days so rich in problem-solving (topsoil recovery, de-siltification), damage avoidance (floods), and shortage relief (energy).

Since man discovered fire, there has been an abiding human desire to light up the night. God provided a large and beautiful moon to night-light the Earth and assuage human fear of the dark. As more and cheaper lighting means were discovered (wood fires, oil lamps, gas lamps, electric lamps (incandescent, fluorescent, light emitting diodes), the scope of night lighting vastly expanded. Beyond the basic need for home interior lighting, lighting has proliferated via porch lights, pole lamps, garage and driveway lights, street lights, bridge lights, auto headlights and tail lights and parking lights, truck and bus running lights, train lights, rail-crossing lights, boat lights, shore light houses, aircraft lights, airfield landing lights, monumental building lights, merchant window lights, merchandise lights, etc., etc. Night has become day in the modern world, but the cost in dollars and energy for this night-to-day environment is becoming prohibitive. Consider that burning a 100-watt light bulb one year consumes nearly one-half ton of coal. We are running out of repository energy resources to relieve our fear of the night. Furthermore, we are working and socializing ourselves away from home-sweet-home and precious family amidst brightened nighttime freedom . . . and becoming a bit wild and dangerous. Veteran Permanence Card
I’ve carried my VA Card for many years. I am not currently drawing any benefits, but the VA was a real help to me in a past time of need. I usually keep the Card it in my wallet, now more a reminder of seven years’ military service to God and Country. It also is one of only two photo IDs I tote (the other is my driver’s license). On account of wallet wear & tear, I’ve had to replace my VA Card a few times. Maybe a stronger card would help. It's Time to Marry Early
A few years ago on the Global Environmental Service website, the marriage month of June was devoted to expounding Biblical precepts of Christian marriage via several blogs. Love in America was seriously troubled. Single life was dominating. If marriage were entered, it was deferred to age 28 years or so. With only one child produced per union, American love culture was not being generationally maintained. Even worse, marriages were lasting an average of only seven years. Women competing with men in the modern workforce was causing husbands and fathers to lose providential potency necessary for choosing or maintaining a wife and child. The American Way of Life and the Christian Way of Life was lapsing.
In advanced times, world humanity has been getting prettier and more mobile. Loose singles traveling more than ever nationally and internationally were beauty-tempted into brief-encounter intimacy producing thrills for the lonely traveler, unwanted children, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and loosening the vital marriage bond. Over two dozen STDs now haunt American family and social life. They linger, disfigure, dysfunction, sterilize, and compose an unhappy ending to glorious human sexuality. There is growing evidence that footloose, cross-border travel also brings a host of lethal diseases home to sanitary America. Ambassadors for Christ extend minds-and-missionaries across the waters, raising standards of living and sanitation in foreign lands, connecting Spiritually in the Lord before engaging appreciable physical interaction. Conflict (war & terrorism), trade, and financial ambassadors driven by heavy physical (unspiritual) repertoire were picking up diseases that spread like wildfire back home. God, who is Spirit, promises no diseases for His beloved children. They are kosher, they are pure, they are healthy and long-living according to a heavenly lifestyle commanded by God, Father of life, for their good. God’s pure Chosen People carry fewer antibodies because they are so clean and free of disease. They are warned by God not to cozy up to foreigners, lest alien health, compromised by in-country microbes and overworked immune systems, knock theirs down. Modern vaccines and antidotes can be overdone, overtaxing the immune system unto deficiency and collapse. Better it is to sanctify self within a pure family circle to remain healthy, then reach across the waters with both Spiritual purity and God-cleansed lifestyle to sanctify our Maker’s global sonship before walking among them physically and intimately.
God desires that the Earth fill with holy people. Americans need to repair the in-country institution of marriage before much can be said to the brotherhood-at-large with credibility. The official GES position is to sanctify via born-again Christianity earliest in life, then marry early, safely wrapping the family of God in purified oneness and eternal love throughout lifetime. How early is early? I hearken to the Jewish Fatherhood of God and their abiding tradition of Bar Mitzvah. They say a boy reaches manhood at age 12, when he knows the Word of God and can righteously pray for whatever he needs, assured of right answers. God’s enlightened teenager knows first how to live obediently, that is, under divine guidance and with abiding help. What good is education, especially education in the Lord, if God’s Perfect Circle of Love cannot be timely entered, sooner entered. Sacred Love Space (love to God and thy most precious neighbor: wife and children) should be the first thing true knowledge and true wisdom finds . . . the relationship parents attend to first-of-all on behalf of their beloved children. God’s family life design keeps His Children wrapped in the secure blanket of love all the years of life. They are to move from birth-family love to marriage-family love seamlessly, never a gap of singleness, separateness, or loneliness. God ordains love . . . all the way. Parental love in the Lord is far superior to professional overseeing (daycare, academia, military, commercial, governmental, etc.) in developing the Eternal Child and Family, ever within the will and protection and perfection of Almighty God. Modern society espouses easy living, claims a tamed environment, lights the world day and night, and lives better than any past generation. What good is all that progress if the priority of God to give His spotless, wrinkle-free Lambs a joyful, love-full life early as they can handle it, goes wanting? Today, love can and must be put first. Love can and should be right now. Give love first place and watch the problems that so beset us dissolve into history.

These latter-day Adams & Eves will have more time than ever for worshipping and thanking their faithful and generous God, loving and caring for one another, and actively enjoying the fine arts (singing and playing music, dancing, composing songs and literature, engaging photography, painting, culinary arts, etc.), as well as engaging in body-beautifying athletics (nature walks, swimming, jogging, exercise, etc.). It is God’s gift of Heaven on Earth tailored to your desires.

The Millennial Estate Winter Food Garden is offered here as a design implementable world around to relieve hunger and starvation permanently.
Construction practices for green houses make them rather affordable: about 1/10th the price of building a family residence. Weather variabilities and abnormalities due to global warming are making traditional outdoor food gardening and harvests less predictable and fruitful. Accordingly, erecting a larger-than-normal greenhouse provides the most affordable opportunity to move home-based food production from an outdoor summer garden to a year-round indoor greenhouse. With families spending more time in a four-season greenhouse, its ten-fold affordability advantage evokes wonderful opportunity to situate social-recreational amenities there, rather than enlarging the family residence.
Living with more stationarity in these latter days calls for a habitat of grand size and rich features. Furnishing the greenhouse generously limits need for frequent, dangerous automotive travel. Home life grows into the activity realm of small-town living. Love safely abounds, perhaps more than ever before . . . a characteristic fitting to God-promised heavenly, easy days on Earth. Wind Power Fence Electricity From The Perimeter
Wind power is usually a grounded, stand-alone, propeller-driven generator of electricity. Relative to 12-hour-per-day solar power (usually placed atop slanted rooftop space or flat rooftop space equipped with slanted framework) wind power generation is continuous (24 hours per day). Both vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) and horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) technologies are widely used. Unlike silent solar power, wind power involves visual rotation dynamism and a small amount of rotation noise in generating electricity.
Global Environmental Service has pioneered the concept of using solar power generation and wind power generation within a vertical fence architecture ideally suited to the GES Millennial Estate habitat. Power potency of solar or wind (or solar + wind) fence technology is so great, needs of a family residence can be fully met with relatively few 4’ or 8’ lineal sections of solar or wind fencing. The GES Millennial Estate contemplates family life on larger-than-average 20th Century land area (perhaps one or two acres) enclosed by substantial privacy fencing (800 feet to 1,200 feet total). Implementing the entire perimeter with solar and wind fencing yields a huge energy surplus. Such technical fencing is more expensive than traditional privacy fencing, but carries the positive quality of soon paying for itself at the market rate of generated electrical energy. Of course, traditional fencing can be intermingled with power fencing to accommodate family need. All fence types (vinyl, wood, canvas, metal, poly mesh, solar, and wind) provide varying degrees of privacy, containment, exclusion, shade, beauty, wind-breaking, and neighborhood noise suppression. Estate families can creatively compose their fence utility preferences just as they would for core residence amenities (dwelling, greenhouse, pool, garage, tool shed, workshop, barn, chicken coop, garden, etc.).
GES wind fences engage aero-active surfaces ranging in size from aircraft propellers to desk fans. Smaller power units might only generate 10 watts, but begin to spin (generate electricity) under lighter winds than larger diameter power units. Micro wind generators can be configured in matrix fashion to form an aesthetic, functional wind power fence section (e.g., a 4’ X 4’ power matrix of 10” diameter, 10-watt wind power generators would yield 160 watts or 1.4 mega-watthours annually). Anchored VAWTs nested in 4’ x 4’ or 4’ x 8’ micro-matrix fence sections will be able to capture wind energy values from ALL compass points if the egg-crate framework is strong and slender, rather than deep. Anchored (non-pivoting) HAWTs, large or small, lack 180-degree horizontal wind capture scope.
Mankind has lived through much of the 20th Century distressed by energy shortage. Depletion of petroleum, natural gas, and coal has had many fearing the end of our energetic life style, even the end of the world. Solar-Wind Power Fence
Drawing power from Nature’s freely given sun and wind affords several technical answers within the familiar, aesthetic, multipurpose, property fence format. Solar fence and wind fence power generation technologies have been separately presented on the Global Environmental Service (GES) website. The solar-wind combo design presented here attempts to blend solar power and wind power modalities within an individual fence panel replicable along East and West property perimeters. East-West deployment is advantageous for energy capture from Earth’s characteristic westerly wind flow. Slanted planar or louvered solar panels enable radiance reception near the optimum sun angle. Since wind power flows 24 hours per day and sun power has only half-time availability (12 hours per day average), East-West compassing favoring sustained wind power is optimal.
The GES Solar-Wind fence design springs from Venturi nozzle aerodynamics. The wind-facing fence section is contoured to serve as a square rather than circular converging nozzle. Captured wind power (mechanical power) is converted to electrical power using a turbogenerator mounted in the nozzle throat. Early tests of this geometry at wind speeds found in Pittsburgh, PA (about 9 miles per hour), however, did not yield throat/intake wind velocity ratios as promising as Venturi predictions. Since Venturi behavior is well-established aerodynamics, further R&D of converging-diverging nozzle geometry in the regime of weather wind velocity is planned.
Solar-Wind fencing would likely result in fences unusually thicker than traditional, but has potential to drive a stationary horizontal wind turbine (eliminate the complication of pivoting weathervane accessorizing). Horizontal pivoting adds cost and diminishes traditional fence utility (barrier, exclusion, containment, privacy, etc.).
Brief Description of the Venturi Prize
Contemplate a 4’ x 4’ (16 square feet) wind capture fence area (de facto air intake) that ducts/compresses air to/through a one-square-foot throat area housing a small turbogenerator. According to Venturi dynamics, this configuration could potentially increase wind velocity 16-fold. Accordingly, ducting 9 MPH average Pittsburgh westerly wind velocity might give rise to 144 MPH wind flow in the throat. Kinetic energy of moving air rises according to the square of velocity. Accordingly, energy harvest by a turbogenerator could be 256 times greater than a stand-alone 12-inch diameter wind turbine. Small-scale tests in low-grade wind did not achieve either 16-fold wind velocity increase or yield a 256-fold kinetic energy boost.
Future R&D
Dr. Patterson is inclined to attribute low throat velocity in his solar wind fence experiment to inadequate wind force. Wind encountering shallow intake angles becomes blocked, and the fence acts as a wind brake. Wind reverses direction as it hits the relatively flat solar intake and re-directs laterally, starving the throat. Perhaps a contoured or stepped intake beginning at a steeper angle and progressing to a shallow would allow entering wind to build velocity gradually within the convergent nozzle. It also may be possible to tap fence solar-electric power to turn intake or exhaust accelerator blades, thereby raising throat wind velocity. Such pre-or-post-acceleration is familiar technology in jet engines (compressors and afterburners). However, there is a delicate balance to pre-throat and post-throat flow management. To the extent that wind acceleration nullifies wind-breaking (reversing or lateral flow), the additional hardware might prove helpful. However, over-acceleration (a desired condition with jet engines) might create intake wind velocity danger in front of the fence. Aircraft jet engines have been known to draw debris, birds, and even human beings into the aero works with crippling hardware destruction and horrible death outcomes. Thoughtfully situated in direct sun, it creates no obstacle to traditional lawn & garden duties (mowing, raking, watering, thatching, fertilizing). You might consider the tech cluster a compact “technology fountain” or “technology water garden” making home life safer, easier, more reliable, and more affordable, while demanding little maintenance.
Future
A single 2’ x 2’ solar hot water coiled PEX panel prototype will be fabricated to test for exit temperature in the hot water range (135F) using cold water input and various flow rates (gpm) under four-season weather conditions, especially lean winter season sunshine. Variables and interrelationships to be explored or quantified during future experimentation include water flow rate, water temperature, water purity, air temperature, wind speed, time of year, longitude, latitude, sun angle, lux, thermal efficiency, energy transfer, light transmission, snow fall, snow accumulation, rain fall, cloudiness, material cost, material fabricability, material durability, panel integrity, and panel maintenance burden.

Ruralization will characterize the next frontier for population growth in Third Millennium U.S.A., following urbanization and suburbanization.
