Differential Habit Management (DHM)
Augmenting Quality of Life (QOL) often requires discontinuing some things that inhibit full satisfaction, to make room for the better life, the better you. In search of an Optimal Lifestyle, we might think of ourselves as a Package of Habits to be managed. Life is not a game, but it might be helpful to think of our habits as "cards" we are dealt by experience. Habit Management amounts to composing the best hand by selecting new cards from the Deck of Life, and discarding others. Since habits have a "sticky" nature, losing less useful or "bad" habits can be difficult. Differential Habit Management (DHM) is a system of habit management that endeavors to keep the mind in charge of the habit weaning process. At the core, DHM attempts to ramp down on a habit by incremental changes so small the body does not rebel during the step of reduction. It is indifferent to the unit change, and eventually accommodates to the new, lower level of habit involvement.

Rational Voting Model (RVM)
Governance by divine standards should possess executive insight sufficient to continuous peace. The promise of education, knowledge, and wisdom is to arrive at war-free, crime-free civilization, not annihilative perfection. Carefully choosing leadership and agenda is, therefore, essential to widening civility, to perfecting democracy, to world peace.
The Rational Voting Model (RVM) can help citizens, news media, political parties, government, academia, businesses, and the Church to better research issues relevant to governance, address them in a systematic and rational way, and choose Stewards of State with best agenda (platform). Investing quantitative rigor brings a degree of internal consistency to modern, complex voting decisions that the human mind is otherwise less able to precisely handle. We begin to exceed our cognitive capacity when forced to weigh more than about seven "objects" simultaneously, and voting for leadership regularly involves more complexity (candidates + issues + general interest + personal interest) than this.
Heads of family are the core of U.S. governance, and might be able to exercise the Rational Voting model on behalf of their beloveds. If that task transcends family talent, an assembly of voluntary Church talent (e.g., Stewardship Committee) might get the job done holding Christ's priorities highest. Local newspapers might be able to assemble talent requisite to a good analysis on behalf of local interest. Since the Rational Voting Model is explicit (all factors influencing decision are openly stated and weighed), subscribers can judge for themselves if involved journalists have accurately reflected family, Church, or hometown interests in the RVM they publish. Candidates, PACs, and Parties might use the RVM to unfold their agenda to constituencies to help validate its rationality. PoliSci departments and business organizations might tap their talent pool to publish RVMs standardized on good government or business prosperity.

Equine Transportation
Untapped in the mobility portfolio of today's energy-starved lifestyle is equine transportation. Yet the horse has the longest history of carrying man across the diverse landscapes of God's world. They used to roam free in America. Horses were a gift to the first American settlers: the American Indian. With Christian migration came marvelous inventions of steam locomotives (the iron horse) and automobiles (horseless carriages). During the Petroleum Age, however, metal workhorses became overly consumptive of fuel, and extremely dangerous to human life. While creative engineers work to bring metal mobility into the safety zone, there may just be a window of opportunity to revisit living equine transportation. Society has expressed an abiding love for things that move. So, it is likely that horses and cars and trains and planes and boats will remain in the equation of beloved things. For these stressful days of energy uncertainty, perhaps the horse will again gallop to the rescue, and come to occupy a bigger part of what moves America forward.

The downloadable PDF to the right is drawn from a PowerPoint R&D Chronology of model-building for the TriGo Family Transportation platform. Such scale-up is common practice in automotive R&D, often using clay models. It brings a degree of realism to a concept vehicle beyond sketches, engineering drawings, and many types of computer graphics. Modeling was particularly helpful in TriGo R&D because the planar-triangular form factor is novel and difficult to visualize mentally or in two dimensions. The 3D exercise has added several valuable features to the TriGo Concept, and maintains original positive expectations about it becoming a vehicle well-suited to transportation needs of the Peace Millennium.

Fisher-Pry Technological Substitution Theory
Technology Forecasting embodies a variety of forecasting instruments intending to predict progress involving Technological Advance. The Fisher-Pry Model (Fisher, J.C. and Pry, R.H., 1971) addresses the matter of Technological Substitution. It operates on the premise of a systematic march of progress proceeding from one technological means to another. The core metric is the Application Ratio, formed by dividing the New Technology Fraction (fn) by the Old Technology Fraction (fo). Over long periods of time (usually years or decades) the rate of substitution is exponential, which conveniently plots as a straight line on a logarithmic scale. A multi-year future can be extrapolated from a Fisher-Pry trend when right technical metrics are used to characterize Technological Advance. Multi-decade substitution of diesel-for-sail in shipping and air-for-rail in transportation are among the many grand technological substitution phenomena persuasively interpreted by Fisher-Pry. Since the technologies involved are so different, there is need for good judgment and prudent experimentation to find the right unit of Technological Advance common to both old and new contenders. In an article contemplating automobile light-weighting for better fuel efficiency, I examined the rate of substitution of aluminum for steel via Fisher-Pry using average pounds per car as the metric (Patterson, W.C., 1971). Were I to revisit this analysis today, I probably would compare competing metals on a volume rather than weight basis, since manufacturers substitute more on a gauge-for-gauge basis than a pound-for-pound basis (although pounds saved are what count most).
Few orthodox time series statisticians endorse Fisher-Pry Substitution Theory because extrapolations greatly exceed time horizons reachable by conventional time series, and projections are less amenable to confidence limit estimation. Proponents of Technology Forecasting accept Trend Extrapolation according to the persuasiveness of persistent, orderly advance of technology they eventually become familiar with in this field. Each case of prediction also carries left-brain image validation that tends to overshadow weakness of right-brain statistical methodology rigor. Those believing in the faithfulness of God to meet man’s needs also are inclined towards Trend Extrapolation practices of Technology Forecasting. Believers easily accept that God sustains man through a never-ending stream of new technology gifts-to-need. In other words, divine munificence composes an invisible “pattern” that transcends the obligatory “pattern” rationality of statistical time series.
The industrial epoch of Technology Forecasting began in the 1960s, when pioneer Jim Bright offered the first college-level course in Technology Forecasting at Harvard Business School. This is the same time frame Strategic Planning was legitimizing by doctoral research and course offerings at Harvard Business School. Advocates of Strategic Management attempted to systematize General Management Theory (including High-Tech), and Technology Forecasting seemed to provide a correspondingly large forecast window on Situation Analysis (the first step in Strategic Management). As Corporate Managements surrendered more to shorter-term market and finance urgencies and optimizations, Technology Forecasting (linked most to fading manufacturing and R&D potencies) salience in the East gradually waned. Bright and his associates relocated to Texas, offering Tech Forecasting consulting services with a heavy orientation towards the emerging hot buttons of energy and transportation. The other citadel of Technology Forecasting situated at the birthplace of aviation, notably Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio (headquarters of Air Force R&D). The technical leap into aerospace demanded steep progress in materials, fuels, control, etc., and Technology Forecasting was regarded capable of embracing this crystallizing vision.

Rational Decision Making
Decision making theorists tell us that the human mind loses its capacity to weigh alternatives accurately when the number of alternatives exceeds about seven. This number also approximates the number of random symbols the mind can accurately recall from short term memory. These cognitive limitations are one reason humans write complex things onto “page” memory and then weigh decision factors in smaller clusters, ultimately pair-wise comparisons. If the weighing is representative, the outcome will have Representative Validity, an essential balancing quality of rational decision-making.
Futurists employ Relevance Analysis to raise Representative Validity in decision-making for Technology Forecasting. A two-dimensional array is used, like Expected Value Tables of Management Science for optimizing outcomes based upon Alternatives of diverse utility and risky or uncertain States of Nature. The tabular form of Relevance Analysis is more generalizable than Expected Values decision-making. The two main dimensions may be refined (subdivided) to capture more decision detail, often subjective input from experts. In a simple Technology Forecasting project addressing only 5 variables along each array dimension, the analyst simultaneously contemplates 25 points in decision space. This is more than three times the mind’s cognitive capacity to decide a matter via concentration only. The Relevance Analysis template serves not only as paper memory for remembering factor weights, but it swiftly and accurately automates the rigorous math connecting the weights to a synthesis.
In the downloadable Relevance Analysis template, an attempt was made to rationalize material selection for product packaging to illustrate methodology. Four chief packaging contenders were chosen: aluminum, glass, plastic, and steel. Key engineering properties of each packaging candidate were thought to decode (1) the long-term ideal material, and (2) explain the existing or long term market mix of packaging materials. Subjective input to the Relevance Analysis was in the form of a priori importance weighting of material attributes. In energy-short times, for example, lighter weight or recyclability might be given more subjective weight than strength or first cost.

Towards a More Compassionate Sharing
of
Nature's Water Endowment
Although the U.S.A. is most blessed with life-giving rivers, there is inequity in their distribution. Generally speaking, the East is richer than the West and the North is richer than the South in terms of river intensity. Not surprisingly, a similar high-to-low pattern is found in the Nation’s precipitation characteristic. Global warming is expected to exacerbate variances in precipitation and river intensity. Southwest desertification will more than double, with attendant loss of food crop productivity, potable water, and habitability. Northeast seawater inundations arising from polar ice cap melting are expected to exact a heavy toll on expensive, population-dense sea coast real estate. As rising oceans carve themselves greater evaporative area, intensified rainfall will swell natural silt-laden rivers, bringing higher and wider flood extremes.
A National Grid of Man-Made Rivers is proposed to moderate adverse extremes in the distribution of natural rivers, precipitation, and global warming. The envisioned North-to-South and East-to-West River Grid design will equalize national river intensity and serve as a hydro-buffer to emerging climate extremism.

Grid Rivers are a multi-billion-dollar vision amenable to private enterprise and charitable collaboration. Simplified Analytical Hierarchy Process
Quantitative Aid To Decision Making
The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was conceived by Dr. Thomas Saaty as a mathematically rigorous way to quantify subjective decision making. In its simplest practical form, AHP evokes a goal, alternative ways to the goal, and criteria for judging the merits of each alternative (basic GAC decision structure). Although inputs to the decision can be numerical values (e.g., speed, weight, distance), the power of Saaty’s AHP lay in its capacity to treat qualitative, subjective judgements with accuracy and consistency. This is achieved through use of a ratio scale comparing the merit of every decision entity via exhaustive, systematic pairwise comparisons. Matrix operations of pairwise data yield Eigenvalues, Eigen Vectors, and Consistency values instrumental to the decision solution.
The Simplified AHP (SAHP) template offered as an EXCEL download skirts ratio scaling, numerous pairwise comparisons, and matrix complexity of the original AHP. Resort to interval scaling significantly reduces the quantity of judgments required (by 80% in the Disaster Response example). EXCEL’s “what-if” ease and the author’s simplified sensitivity testing enable rather efficient, alternative closure on decision optimization. Overall, the SAHP structures GAC decisions similar to AHP, but invokes a less complicated pathway to solution. Carefully done, both “processes” should yield similar results. The really big decisions of modern times surely benefit from quantification and mathematical rigor. More important, however, is the quality thinking that perceives and composes the decision core. Trust God and a well-educated mind to truly see the decision need and content well.

Opportunity Curve
Predicting First-Mover Benefits
The pace of change, even rapid change, usually is gradual. Amazingly, it also is rather predictable. The literature of management science is rich in theoretical curves that track change well enough to give management professionals forecasts of a firm’s future against which they can formulate plans and allocate resources better than companies “flying blind.” In the category of growth curves and learning curves, I have researched and put forward a curve theory for first movership. It does a pretty good job of predicting lifetime market share dynamics for firms earliest to establish in an industry (the First Movers). It seems that First Movers usually grow to largest size and occupy a leading, predictable market position over industry lifetime. Among the rewards to innovation are early prosperity, lengthy staying power, and enduring returns to scale. I call my theoretic an Opportunity Curve, and simplified calculation of its exponential parameters in the EXCEL download adjacently offered. Modern innovators in stream energy and safety (solar power, wind energy, robotic transportation, etc.) might find the Opportunity Curve helpful in reducing intrinsic uncertainty in those complex and dynamic high-tech realms. Crisis Fund Prudent Financial Preparedness for These Times
Truly these are the days of Great Tribulation. Consider the multiplicity of world-ending processes nations are engaging: Global Nuclear War, Global Terrorism, Global Financial Instability, Pandemics, Global Warming, Global Climate Damage, Global Hunger, Desperate International Migration, Family Unit Disintegration, etc. Crises of increasing magnitude and frequency are forcing themselves onto regional, national, and international agenda and seeming to stay. Internationally-connected minds cogitate, but comprehensive solutions elude. World leaders chip away at the Boulder of Tribulation producing only incremental progress. Affected headmasters hope to buy time for more analyses, convene expertise more broadly, fill the air with frustrated discussion, and raise impassioned pleas for cooperation and answers.
As a Spiritually-driven person in a financially-driven, troubled world, I would be remiss not to suggest much fervent prayer and diligent search of Holy Scripture to get right answers direct from the right source: the One who created all things and knows exactly how they work, including precious us. Spirit-led people not only don’t get into trouble in the first place, they find their way out of trouble faster.

Evident in a tax-or-profit-funded enterprise is need for TIME, to not only gather facts, study, and share a problem, but also to pray and search Holy Scripture that has perhaps grown less familiar in secularized society . In these troubled times, not just headquarters are affected, but the great throngs of society bear heavy burdens, too. In the present COVID-19 pandemic we witnessed for the first time in human history the whole world come to a standstill under quarantine. With problems at this unprecedented magnitude, we are well-advised not to just cover ourselves, but see to the needs of idled or languishing fellow citizens sharing our global ship of distress.
In better times, grass roots families tucked away savings to see them through the darker hours. In lesser times, less exploitable governments and businesses and churches may be the only ones poised to exercise oversight on behalf of the less fortunate. In some cases a strategic reserve is the answer (e.g., petroleum, food banks, social security, etc.). When seemingly unmovable problems surface unpredictably, arrive in multiples, and overwhelm whole societies, one indicated coping strategy involves setting up a financial (fully-liquid) multi-crisis fund to carry victims through the unanticipated, compelled pause and subsidize problem-solving time and effort by Spiritual-intellectual shepherds of the society.
