Pillar of Fire by Night and Cloud by Day
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people. Exodus:13.21-22
Were the Jews under Moses “lost and wandering” for 40 years, as time and distance in the wilderness might imply? They coursed southward, away from the Promised Land initially. Hugging the perimeter of the Sinai Peninsula doubled the distance and time of travel. Recognizing 40 years as 2 generations, it may be that the flock was unready to enter a land of milk and honey after only one generation of rehabilitation, murmuring often. The pillars of light and cloud confirm that God was surely leading them. They were visibly comforted by this evidence of divine presence. These tangibles from an invisible God rehearsed the entire body of God’s People in a daily practice of faithfulness. Routing kept the needful flock near water. For the southern leg, it also kept them near Egypt and Africa, should the Pharaoh have a change of heart. Seeming rag-tag wanderers, they actually were Egypt’s only hope on Earth for Spiritual eyesight and leadership. Without God’s People, both Egypt and Africa would go dark for a long time.
