Bible References on Marriage

Silence is Golden

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm:46.10)

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government will be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of host will perform this. (Isaiah:9.6-7)

Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools; for they consider not that they do evil. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God; for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. (Ecclesiastes:5.1-2)

Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord (Zechariah:2.13a)

Master, careth thou not that we perish? And He (Jesus) rose and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea,

Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. (Mark:4.38-39)

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may live a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for many, to be testified in due time. (1 Timothy:2.1-6)

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest,

he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His. (Hebrews:4.9-10)

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation (quiet conduct) of the wives; while they behold your chaste conversation (quiet conduct) coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and or wearing of gold, or of putting on apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in sight of God of great price. (1 Peter:3.1-4)

It is clear that God desires quiet in His presence, and for His people. It also is clear that the wife is to be a quiet presence at home and in shared time with her husband. Children, likewise, are to mature into peaceful, quiet adults. The mind of God’s habitation and the home of love’s perfection should be the most heavenly places on Earth, registering no disturbance of the peace, or trespass by the world. As end times unfold, there should be more rest composing the daily routine. Peace and rest are attributes of Godly living that connect well, and will be much in daily life when God’s Kingdom is established on Earth.

Today’s world is a growing symphony of sound. Weather is at a crescendo. The transportation system moves with a low roar. Factories are quieting, and rescue sirens pierce the day less and less, but their presence reminds us that we have not yet arrived at heaven on earth. Modern media adds engaging sight and sound that dominate the senses far more of the time than quiet newspaper and mail precursors. Some report that we are before a talking screen 50 hours a week, passively watching more than living. Even the beautifying environment of houses and lands and cars and beautiful people draw extreme attention, distracting human kind from its true core and calling: living in the presence of God. While we of refined humanity should be experiencing constant inward direction from the still small voice of God (the conscience) and inspirational visions from God with all our cherished independence and freedom, it seems that American life is lived outside the body and externally driven. A consequence of exterior motivation is a lot of competition for things and argumentation to win them. Since the God of peace has been so crowded out of our stream of consciousness, conversations today often lapse into disharmony, put-downs, contestation, conflict, shouting matches, and broken relationships.

Marriage in the Lord looms as a wonderful door of escape from our audibly and visually ‘loud” world. New husbands and wives have an opportunity to repair to God in their new living circumstance. Serenity can be re-discovered, even claimed, as newlyweds compose a new, paired lifestyle at the center of God’s will. It is worth promising each other, and dedicating to each day. God has been missing you. Your busy-ness has been stealing away peace and quiet. Embrace the reverence of silence in the presence of Almighty and Ever-Loving God, and newlyweds of this generation can pioneer heaven on earth and promised rest, right in Home Sweet Home. Soft voices and heavenly visions of love can abide if you make provision for them. The Scripture encourages walking in the Spirit, and fresh homes of marriage can welcome that Sweet Spirit at the door, even as God’s man carries his sweet bride across the threshold. Preferring and lifting up Holy Spirit presence, God’s matchless Comforter, brings light and life, health and power that joyfully stays forever.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, perseverance, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control, against such there is no law. (Galatians:5.22-23)

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is peace; Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is love. There is Comfort in life’s darkest hour; There is light and life, there is help and power In the Spirit, in the Spirit of the Lord. (Stephen R. Adams)
