Bible References on Marriage
1 Peter:3.1-7
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation (conduct) of the wives; while they behold your chaste conversation (conduct) coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and or wearing of gold, or of putting on apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
Wives are called to extraordinary sacrifice mentally. While it is easy to follow the husband who does all things right, it can be frustrating to tolerate a husband when you know he is not right. Yet, God calls her to that level of submission, humility, loyalty, patience. Men are imperfect, even the brotherhood of Jesus Christ. As they work through times of error or disobedience, it is the singular privilege of the wife to stand by her husband with unwavering love. God deals out His chastisement, not the wife. The boss may demote or fire, not the wife. You remain part of his body, even when his head is not where it should be. God is faithful to restore falling sons, so wives are obliged to let Him do His work. The wife is not to change roles and become Lord or superior or mother. Her service is to God in keeping the role of wife admirable, blameless, faithful. When God is done fixing the husband, he will be so glad his wife stood by him through it all. Transmit love, not “I told you so” or “you should have listened to me.” He will be glad she did not condemn him or desert him when others did. He will be glad he still had a place to lay his troubled head during troubled times. A good wife keeps heaven around when the world tumbles in. Love, marriage, and family is a banner to keep flying (O, say can you see?).
The wise wife will not let outward show become the precious core of her attractiveness. Jewelry, coiffure, and fashion can price a good woman right out of a husband’s life. Don’t drive him to crime to take care of your appearance, or to a second job that robs you of his love company. Womanly physical irresistabilities last the early third of her lifetime, but a wife’s inward Spirit and good works never fail beauty to those who know her well . . . and the husband knows her best of all. He’ll know her forever.
In this harsh world, husbands are to keep wives like fine and delicate china. As world taming still goes on, and heavenly days yet elude, prayers are much needed. God fixes everything through the portal of prayer. Real oneness in marriage enables home team prayer that keeps the world peace agenda progressing, and fragile wives and children safe and sound at the side of each Son of Progress. If things are not right at home, prayers are hindered, and a man will not be successful in the world. When wives leverage the gentle Power of Love, soon and very soon all the homesteads of God’s dear ones will blossom and span the Earth as a Sweet Spirit Neighborhood.
