Bible References on Marriage
Colossians:3.18-21
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
Husbands are figures of God to wives. A husband is her visible Lord and provider of all things. In this matchlessly close relationship, shortcomings of the wife are bound to surface. She is given the easier part in life, but any can err, even in milder home life. Feelings are so much more sensitive in close living and bonding. Even an off-look or misspoken word can cut deep. Wives have greatest earthly power to love a man, but also greatest power to hurt. It is when she fails grace that a “root of bitterness” can grow in the husband’s heart and defile the marriage, even the children (Hebrews:12.15). That is why he must love her with a magnanimous ministering Spirit that keeps her holy, restores her down-fallings, ever presenting her to himself and the indwelling Lord, a palace of polished stone he, too, is polishing (Psalm:144.12).
