Bible References on Marriage

2 Corinthinians:6.14-18

Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel. And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Believers should only marry believers. Accordingly, believers should only court believers in anticipation of marriage, lest emergent strong affections overrule the will of God. Should the eye catch one not a believer, the necessary first step is to win that soul to Christ before drawing together physically. Then both can search to understand what God expects of each before an offense in ignorance grieves their emerging relationship.

The yoke reference pertains to two oxen pulling together under one yoke. If oxen are of unequal strength, one will exhaust pulling the greater burden, and the field will not get plowed. Spiritual equality means that both partners to marriage perform their respective duty, expressing love according to their generous endowment from God. It does not mean that a woman must be of equal strength or size or stamina to a man. It means they are robustly qualified to fill out their distinctive, God-given husband and wife roles.

There should be a sense of Calling to the marriage before vows are exchanged. God knew each partner before they were born, planned the life’s work of each before they did anything, and planned their marriage in love before they ever met (Psalm:32 & 139). God’s men are lambs, gentle shepherds, caring gentlemen of wisest counsel. God’s wives are even more docile lambs, sweetly gentle, kind, and lovingly yielded to her life-shepherd, fully content with the green pastures and still waters he has led her into (Psalm:23)
